Winning 10th bracelet is monumental
AFTER FIGHTING hard here in Las Vegas for more than a month, and making it into the money in six tournaments, with three final tables, I won my coveted bracelet No. 10! The money wasn't bad, either - $630,000 for first place. But honestly, I would have paid at least that much (assuming that I had it!) to win another World Series of Poker bracelet and tie Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson for the all-time lead. Fortunately, I won the money, along with the bracelet.Winning WSOP bracelets and other his

Daddy’s Feeling Lucky
Last summer, Ben Foster quit his $110,000-a-year job as a senior product manager at eBay to play online poker full-time. In the months leading up to his decision, the 28-year-old with a degree in statistics had been tracking his winnings on a detailed spreadsheet. After checking and rechecking the numbers, he came to the conclusion that he could earn more money playing poker than working at eBay. Plus, his wife was pregnant with their second child, and he was needed around the house. Foster deci

LAS VEGAS — Sam Farha called to ask if we could do our interview a little later than planned. Was Houston's most famous, winningest, certainly most televised (that's him with a cigarette dangling from his lip and jewelry poking out his unbuttoned shirt) poker player stewing because he was knocked out in the first round of the 2006 World Series of Poker?"I will tell you why. I'm in the middle of a very big poker game here in my room," he said. That's how you get to Carnegie Hall, and the final tabl

The World Series of Poker draws like never before
T he grumpiest man I ever knew was an old poker pro in Las Vegas named Sarge Farris, who was universally understood to be the best five-card-stud player in the world.Unfortunately for Farris, no one had played five-card stud seriously for ages. Chances are, he wasn't too sunny even in the days when he could find a game, but by the time I met him in 1980, he was also universally understood to be one of the world's leading curmudgeons. The game of choice for high-stakes poker had already become Tex

'Jesus' Ferguson works miracles at World Series of Poker
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Chris "Jesus" Ferguson put his tournament on the line twice Tuesday, both times catching miracle cards at the World Series of Poker and turning a below-average stack into more than enough chips to remain a contender in the main event. In a feisty exchange, the poker pro raised and re-raised his way into a massive pot holding pocket kings, with the board showing a harmless-looking queen, five and four.Opponent Robert Ozeran, a 21-year-old student from the University of Southern Ca

World Series of Poker Day 2 At Rio Dedicated To Doyle Brunson
The Rio honored one of EOG'S contributors and poker legend Doyle Brunson today. This was 30th appearance. Doyle was given the microphone and started the day's activities off by announcing to everyone in attendance to "shuffle up and deal." He was promptly escorted to his seat shortly thereafter. The Rio also roped off an entire section, the center aisle of the Amazon Room so that it could be filled with friends and family of Doyle. Sports betting legends like Dewey Tomko and Billy Baxter, bo

'Fossilman' brings poker to the masses
LAS VEGAS -- In this poker hall, Greg Raymer is a star - signing autographs, posing for pictures and wading through hundreds of slaps on the back and attaboys as he makes his way to his seat.Such is life for one of the men who has redefined what the World Series of Poker is all about.Once a patent attorney for a pharmaceutical company, Raymer won the main event in 2004, pocketed $5 million and confirmed that, no, you didn't have to be a professional card shark to make it big in this wild world o

Knowing when to quit can be half the battle
I can't tell you how many times I've heard people over the years say things to me like, "Looks like you're winning big. You should probably quit before you give it back."Frankly, they just don't understand how poker works. They're often the same people who suffer huge losses at the table, but only manage very small wins. You should never be preoccupied with your winning percentage. Basically, it's a meaningless statistic. People brag to me that they've won 22 days in a row and that they've come o
